Haemi Without a Car — The Fortress at Dawn, the Shrine on Foot

A reader wrote to ask for the Seosan city bus timetable. They had searched and either could not find it, or found it only in Korean.

Here it is, in English. But the more useful half of the answer is that for most of a day in Haemi you will not need a bus at all.

The fortress and the martyrs' shrine are a twenty-one minute walk apart. Once you are in Haemi, your feet are the transport.

The fortress really does open at five in the morning

This surprises people, and it is true. From March to October the gate opens at 05:00 and closes at 21:00. In winter it is 06:00 to 19:00. There is no admission fee and no charge for parking.

Seosan City publishes those hours itself, and the management office answers the phone during the day.

The fortress and the shrine are a 21-minute walk apart

This is the part that changes an itinerary. Haemieupseong Fortress and the Haemi Martyrs' Shrine are two different places, about a kilometre and a half apart, and the walk between them is flat.

Walking times measured on Naver Map, September 2026. The shrine's own directions page describes the same distance — about one kilometre west of the fortress west gate. Allow half an hour if you walk slowly.

So a day in Haemi does not need a taxi and does not need a timetable. Arrive, walk the fortress walls, walk to the shrine, be there for the 11:00 Mass.

Getting to Haemi from Seoul — two ways

The direct bus to Haemi runs only six or seven times a day. The express bus to Seosan runs many times an hour. Which one suits you depends on where you plan to sleep — see below.

One thing to watch if you arrive late. The last city bus from Seosan Terminal to Haemi leaves at 21:05. If you reach Seosan after that, the only way on to Haemi is a taxi — it is 11 km. Sleeping in Seosan avoids the problem entirely.

The Seosan city bus to Haemi — the timetable

These are departure times from Seosan Terminal, as printed in Seosan Transport's own timetable in force from 1 March 2026. This is the weekday timetable; weekends may differ.

You do not need to memorise any of this. The shrine's own directions page puts it more simply: buses toward Haemi leave every 10 to 15 minutes and take 15 to 20 minutes. The table above lists only the services with Haemi printed in the destination; others reach Haemi by way of Unsan or Deokjicheon.

Show the driver 해미 if you want the town, or 해미읍성 for the fortress.

Where to sleep — and how to check the distance yourself

The reader who wrote to us had been caught by a booking site: a cheap hotel that looked under a mile from the fortress turned out to be five miles away.

We think we know what happened, and it is worth explaining, because it will happen to you too. The places you can walk to from the fortress are mostly not on international booking sites at all. What those sites offer as "near Haemieupseong" is usually a hotel in Seosan city — and Seosan city is 11 km from the fortress.

So three things do not come together:

Pick the one that matches what you need. If you want the fortress at five in the morning, sleep in Haemi and expect to book by telephone, in Korean. If you would rather book in advance in English, sleep in Seosan and take the 06:10 bus — you will be standing at the fortress before seven, and it will already be open.

How to measure the distance yourself

Do not use the distance the booking site gives you. Put the name of the accommodation into a map app instead — Naver Map or Kakao Map. Both have English versions.
Set the destination to Haemieupseong and ask for the walking route. You will get a distance and a number of minutes.

There is no train to Seosan

Seosan has no passenger railway station — no KTX and no local service. A high-speed link to the region is planned, but it is years away. Until then the bus is the way in, and the two routes above are the ones to know.

What we could not confirm

Whether the city bus runs to a different timetable at weekends. The official sheet does not say. Treat the times above as weekday times.
The first and last express buses from Seoul to Seosan. We could confirm the frequency and that they run late into the evening, but not the exact first and last departures in that direction. Check when you book.
How many direct buses run from Seoul to Haemi. The shrine says six a day; a timetable aggregator lists seven. Either way it is a thin service, so book ahead.
