Baeron Shrine by City Bus — The 852 from Jecheon Station

A reader asked us a simple question: is there a city bus from Jecheon Station to Baeron Shrine? A taxi runs about 20,000 won each way, and that was more than the trip's budget allowed.

The answer is yes. Bus 852, and the fare is 1,700 won.

But three things have to line up before you can actually ride it, and no single page puts them together: where you board, when it arrives, and how you get back. The last one is the hard part.

First — the 852 does not stop at Jecheon Station

This is the reason for writing the note. If you wait at Jecheon Station, the 852 will not come. More than fifty routes serve the station; the 852 is not one of them.

The nearest 852 stop is Nambu Terminal (남부터미널), about 600 metres from the station — a nine-minute walk. Jecheon's own tourism page gives the same instruction: from Jecheon Station, go to the southern intercity bus terminal and take the 852.

If you arrive in Jecheon by intercity bus instead, board at the Intercity Bus Terminal stop. The 852 stops there too.

Second — three times a day, and the morning run arrives at 9:30

Only the times in bold are printed in the official timetable. The rest are derived from the departure times and the measured running time.

The morning run is the only one that suits a pilgrim. Arriving at 09:30 leaves plenty of room before the 11:00 Mass.

Third — getting back is the real problem

The 852 is not an out-and-back service. It is one long loop. It leaves the depot, passes through Bongyang, climbs into the hills, turns through villages such as Haksan and Nomok, and comes back down into Jecheon. Which means:

• After the morning run reaches Baeron at 09:30, that same bus turns straight back toward town. If you stay for the 11:00 Mass, you have missed it.
• The next bus is the 13:30 run. It passes Baeron and then makes the long circuit through the hill villages before returning — it reaches Haksan at 14:50, so you would not be back in Jecheon until late afternoon.
• The last is the 18:00 run. Heading to a shrine at that hour is not a pilgrimage.

Walking out to the Baeron Entrance stop to catch something else does not work either. That stop is two kilometres from the shrine, and the 852 is the only scheduled route through it as well.

What we suggest — bus out, taxi back

1. Arrive at Jecheon Station before 8 a.m.
2. Walk 9 minutes to the Nambu Terminal stop.
3. Take the 852 (1,700 won).
4. Get off at Baeron at 09:30, and walk 4 minutes to the shrine.
5. Walk the grounds; the pilgrims' Mass is at 11:00.
6. Taxi back to Jecheon Station, about 19,000 won.

Practical details

• Fare. 1,700 won in cash, 1,650 won with a transit card, and a card gives you a free transfer within the hour. Buy a T-money card at any convenience store and top it up with cash.
• What to show the driver. 배론성지. The stop you want is also called 배론.
• Address. 296 Baeronseongji-gil, Bongyang-eup, Jecheon, Chungbuk.
• Taxi. There is a taxi rank in front of Jecheon Station. The station to the shrine is 14 km, about 21 minutes, around 19,000 won.
• Confession is heard for half an hour before Mass.
• Group pilgrimages should call the shrine office in advance, 043-651-4527.

What we could not confirm

• Exactly when the 13:30 and 18:00 runs pass Baeron. No official source prints it; the times in the table above are derived.
• Whether a train from Seoul reaches Jecheon before 8 a.m. Check Korail's English booking site directly.
• The shrine's own website gives the closing time as both 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on different pages. This note follows the earlier one, so that you are never caught out.
