09. WYD 2027 Seoul — Registration & Visa Guide
World Youth Day 2027 is coming to Seoul, and it's going to be massive — somewhere between 500,000 and 1 million young pilgrims from around the world, all converging on one city for one week. If you're planning to be one of them, the two biggest questions you have right now are probably: How do I register? and Do I need a visa?
This guide covers everything we know so far — and what we're still waiting on. We'll update it as official details are announced.

📝 Registration
When Does Registration Open?
As of April 2026, official registration has not yet opened. Based on previous World Youth Days, registration typically opens about one year before the event — which means we can expect it to open sometime in mid-to-late 2026. When it does, it will be available through the official WYD Seoul website at wydseoul.org.
How Registration Works
WYD registration follows a two-track system:
- Through your diocese: Most pilgrims register through their local diocese or a diocesan-organized pilgrimage group. Your diocese coordinates travel, accommodation, and group registration. This is the most common and recommended route.
- Individual registration: If your diocese doesn't organize a group, you can register individually through the official WYD website once registration opens.
Pilgrim Packages & Costs
Here's the important part: attending WYD events themselves is free. The catechesis sessions, the prayer vigil, the closing Mass with the Pope — you don't pay to attend those.
However, the WYD organizing committee offers Pilgrim Packages that cover the logistics of your stay. These packages typically include:
- Accommodation (usually shared, often in schools or community centers)
- Meals
- Local transportation during the event
- A pilgrim kit (backpack, guidebook, map, etc.)
The cost of Pilgrim Packages for Seoul has not been announced yet. For reference, previous WYDs have ranged from approximately $100 to $350 depending on the package tier and the number of days selected. Organized pilgrimage groups through dioceses or travel agencies typically estimate around $250 for the WYD registration fee alone, with total trip costs (including flights and extended stays) varying widely.
Registration Confirmation
Once you register, you'll receive a confirmation letter approximately 3 months before the event (around spring 2027). This letter is important — you'll need it for your visa application if a visa is required for your nationality.
🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements
This is where things get interesting — and where Korea's recent legislation makes a real difference.
Do You Need a Visa?
It depends on your nationality. Korea has visa-free agreements with a large number of countries:
- Visa-free entry (up to 90 days): Citizens of most EU countries, the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, Japan, and many others can enter Korea without a visa for stays up to 90 days. Since WYD lasts about 1–2 weeks, most Western pilgrims won't need a visa at all.
- Visa required: Citizens of countries without visa-free agreements with Korea will need to apply for a short-term visit visa (C-3 type) at a Korean embassy or consulate. Your WYD registration confirmation letter will support your application.
K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization)
Even if your country has visa-free access, you may need a K-ETA — Korea's electronic travel authorization system, similar to the US ESTA or Europe's ETIAS.
- Current status: K-ETA requirements have been suspended for many nationalities through the end of 2026 as a tourism promotion measure.
- Starting January 1, 2027: K-ETA requirements are expected to be reinstated. Since WYD takes place in August 2027, most visa-free travelers will likely need to apply for K-ETA before arriving.
- How to apply: Online at k-eta.go.kr. The process takes about 10 minutes, costs approximately 10,000 KRW (~$7 USD), and is usually approved within 24–72 hours.
- Validity: K-ETA is valid for 3 years once approved.
Note: Given the scale of WYD 2027, there is a possibility that the Korean government may extend the K-ETA exemption or create a special arrangement for WYD pilgrims. Nothing has been confirmed — watch the official WYD website for updates.
Simplified Visa Process: The New Law
On March 31, 2026, Korea's National Assembly passed the International Cultural Event Support Act — a landmark law designed specifically to support large-scale international cultural events, with WYD 2027 as its first beneficiary.
Article 6 of this law explicitly calls for streamlined immigration procedures for foreign participants. While the specific measures haven't been detailed yet (the law takes effect around October 2026), this could mean:
- Expedited visa processing for WYD pilgrims
- Special visa categories or group visa arrangements
- Simplified documentation requirements
- Dedicated immigration lanes at Korean airports during the event period
The WYD Local Organizing Committee has confirmed they are coordinating with the Korean government to simplify entry procedures. More details will be announced once the law takes effect.

🛡️ Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is not a legal requirement for entering Korea, but it is strongly recommended — and many diocesan pilgrimage groups require it as a condition of joining.
Your policy should cover:
- Medical expenses: Korea has excellent healthcare, but it's not free for foreign visitors. A hospital visit or emergency can cost thousands of dollars without insurance.
- Trip cancellation: If something happens before departure and you need to cancel, you'll want to recover your costs.
- Baggage loss or delay: Especially important with connecting flights.
- Emergency evacuation: Medical evacuation from Korea back to your home country, if needed.
Look for a policy that specifically covers the dates of your entire trip (including Days in the Diocese if you're participating). Many travel insurance providers offer plans tailored to large group events. Budget approximately $50–$150 depending on your country and coverage level.
🎒 What to Bring
August in Seoul is hot and humid — temperatures regularly hit 30–35°C (86–95°F) with high humidity. WYD also involves a lot of walking and outdoor events. Pack accordingly:
- Sun protection: Hat, sunscreen (SPF 50+), sunglasses. You will be outdoors for hours at a time.
- Rain gear: August is peak monsoon season. A lightweight rain poncho is essential — umbrellas block the view of people behind you at events.
- Comfortable shoes: You'll walk 15–25 km per day. Broken-in walking shoes or trail sandals, not new shoes.
- Water bottle: Reusable. Seoul has water refill stations, and the organizing committee will set up more during the event.
- Sleeping bag or mat: For the prayer vigil night (sleeping outdoors at the vigil site before the closing Mass).
- Portable charger: Your phone is your map, translator, and event guide. Bring a power bank.
- Adapter: Korea uses Type C and Type F plugs (round, two-pin, 220V). Bring a universal adapter.
- Cash + card: Korea is very card-friendly, but some street vendors are cash-only. Withdraw KRW at airport ATMs for the best rates.
- Documents: Passport, WYD registration confirmation, travel insurance card, K-ETA approval (if applicable), printed copies of accommodation details.
- Modest clothing: For liturgical events. Shorts and sleeveless tops are fine for walking around Seoul but have something with sleeves for Masses.

💡 The Bottom Line
Registration hasn't opened yet, but that doesn't mean you should wait to prepare. Here's what you can do right now:
- Contact your diocese — ask if they're organizing a WYD 2027 pilgrimage group
- Check your passport — make sure it's valid through at least February 2028 (6 months after the event)
- Check your visa status — look up whether your nationality has visa-free access to Korea
- Bookmark wydseoul.org — the official source for registration dates and updates
- Start saving — between flights, the pilgrim package, travel insurance, and spending money, budget accordingly
Korea is going all in on this event. The government passed a special law, 15 dioceses are preparing to host pilgrims, and the organizing committee is working with immigration authorities to make entry as smooth as possible. When registration opens, you'll want to be ready.
